12U Cowichan Valley Ravens
Winged wonders
The Ravens made the trek to the border city of Lloydminster, AB/SK, and flapped away with 7 of 8 points.
Cowichan Valley is now 4-0-1 in its last five games after a 2-9 start and possesses the Midas Touch when it comes to scoring, firing 27 goals in four games. In three of four games, they needed the offence.
The Ravens really took off after hosting a showcase in mid-October. Since then, they are 5-2-1 and look like a team you don’t want to face in the Alpine Cup presented by Pro Hockey Life.
They will host another showcase in January.
14U Vancouver Aeros
Nearly unbeatable
The brick wall went up in Winnipeg this weekend as the Vancouver Aeros pitched two shutouts and gave up just two goals in four games.
Ironically, Winnipeg is where Nikolai Khabibulin, nicknamed the Bulin Wall, got his NHL start, and Violet Stanely and Sofia Sangha were near perfect in between the pipes, doing their best Bulin Wall impressions.
Stanley stopped 35 of 36 shots she faced, while Sangha kicked out 38 of 39 pucks, helping the Aeros improve to 11-1-0-1, good enough to tie for first with the Jr. Ooks. Vancouver has given up a ridiculously low 15 goals against in 13 games.
14U Manitoba Mavericks
Thrilling win
The hosts didn’t win the most, but they did give their fans a great show with a win over Victoria Hockey Academy in a shootout on Friday night.
In a game that featured 67 shots, the Mavs slipped away with a 2-1 win. Manitoba outshot Victoria 34-33, and Willow Winslow’s first-period goal almost stood up as the game winner.
That is, until Avery Loudoun scored with less than two minutes to play, sending things to a shootout, where the Mavericks had their fans on their feet with a victory.
